Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ

The Basic Needs Program seeks to provide support to students experiencing housing insecurity on a short-term basis as they identify long-term housing solutions. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ is able to provide emergency transitional housing accommodations based on space availability.

To be eligible for any Emergency Shelter or Rapid Rehousing support resources, applicants must:

  • Be a currently enrolled and a matriculated Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ student (must be actively attending classes during the semester that support is requested);
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 units. If participating in the Rapid Rehousing & Housing Security Program, you must be enrolled in at least 6 units and enrolled in the following semester in order to receive each month's support.
  • Be able to demonstrate a recent urgent or catastrophic event that resulted in loss of housing or needing emergency shelter. Examples are provided below.

The following example situations may lead to unsafe living situations and the Basic Needs Staff will assess these scenarios on a case by case basis to assess if the student is in or will be in an unsafe living situation based on accessibility of housing:

  • Lease not renewed or evicted for nonpayment (unexpectedly)
  • Sudden breakup of relationship left them homeless
  • Homeowner suddenly asks renter to leave so they can move back
  • Employer terminated you from your job
  • Sleeping in vehicle or on the streets
  • Couch surfing, but have exhausted their welcome

Documentation is required for all housing assistance. Depending on which housing/shelter intervention method is most vital to support your ability to continue your education, the following are required for each program:

Emergency Shelter

The Emergency Shelter accommodation is short-term, temporary shelter either on or off campus. If provided shelter on campus, a valid parking permit is required.

  • Meet with the Basic Needs Case Manager or designee
  • Sign an Emergency Shelter Agreement
  • Create an action plan for securing new housing accommodations
  • Follow-up with Basic Needs Case Manager following emergency shelter departure

Rapid Rehousing & Housing Security Program

The Rapid Rehousing & Housing Security Program is a targeted, campus-community partnership model within the California State University (CSU) system designed to address student homelessness and housing insecurity through coordinated, intensive support. Subsidized housing support is provided between 1-12 months depending on the appropriate established plan determined with the Basic Needs Case Manager. Housing navigation services are able to support accommodations within Ventura County and the student must initiate the process in finding a place to live.

  • Meet with the Basic Needs Case Manager or designee on weekly or bi-weekly basis
  • Submit all required documents to enroll in the program 3 weeks prior to the date of the first rental payment. Documents required:
    • Landlord must complete an ACH to receive Direct Deposit. Document sent to student to deliver to landlord. Landlord sends document directly to our Community Based Organization, United Way of Ventura County.
    • Legal license or rental agreement.
    • Eviction notice or formal letter stating reason for unexpected homelessness or additional housing financial burden.
  •  Sign a Rapid Rehousing Agreement
  • Create a budget
  • Establish an action plan for supporting permanent housing accommodations

In each of these scenarios, a student receiving temporary shelter accommodations from Basic Needs is required to meet with Basic Needs staff on a consistent, regular basis for the duration of time they are receiving services to move forward with identifying and transitioning to stable housing.

All students, regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, who are interested in Basic Needs resources are welcome.
